3 Tips on Selecting the Right Access Control System

Access Control System

How do you know what access control system is right for your organization? It depends on the type of facility, features you need, and regulatory requirements.

Even Google isn’t much of a help. For example, if you Google access control systems, the search returns over 3,000,000,000 results. Also if you change the search to “What is the best access control system?” you get over 2,000,000,000 results, not much of a help.

Similarly, if you Google “What is the best access control system for a college?” the search provides 715,000,000 results. A smaller list but still not very helpful.

To simplify things, let’s say we come up with a list of 10 access control systems. Even though you narrowed down your choices, you still have much more work to do. So, let’s see if we can simplify things.

Tip 1 on Selecting the Right Access Control System

Work with a trusted advisor, either your electronic security provider or a physical security consultant. Remember, you don’t have to go through the process alone, help is available in determining the system that best fits your needs. Let your trusted advisor do the heavy lifting when it comes to narrowing down the search to provide you with two or three options.

Tip 2 on Selecting the Right Access Control System

Take time to become an educated consumer based on the options presented by your trusted advisor. Arrange for demos from each manufacturer and insist on a list of end users from similar organizations. Once you have seen the demos, reach out to colleagues and ask to visit their operations to see first-hand how the access control system performs.

Tip 3 on Selecting the Right Access Control System

Above all select a certified security systems integrator to install, program, manage and service the access control system that best meets your access control and security needs. Once the system is installed make sure that it is performing as promised and your staff is sufficiently trained to operate the system.

Even though you have taken all of the necessary steps to select the right access control system things don’t always go as planned. So, take time to develop your relationship with a trusted advisor to help you along the way.
